Lifeguard Training
Class Objective
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) professionals take over.
Pre-Requisites
Prior to attending class, students must:
- Be at least 15 years old by the end of the class.
- Complete the following Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: Swim 150 yards, tread water for 2 minutes using only their legs, and swim 50 more yards.
- Complete a retrieval exercise within 1 minute 40 seconds or less. This includes: 20 yd. swim, surface dive, retrieve a 10 lb. brick from 9’ depth, swim back 20 yards, and exit without using a ladder or steps.
About the Course
- Full course fee includes pool use, books, a resuscitation mask, and materials.
- Class fee is due at the time of enrollment.
- A partial refund will be issued if the student fails to successfully complete the pre-skills test.
- Attendance at all classes is mandatory.
- Textbooks and materials will be handed out on the first night of class.
- Successful participants must pass the written exam, perform all critical skills, and complete three final skill scenarios.
- Instructor reserves the right to adjust the schedule as needed.

Become a lifeguard at Rock River Rapids
A lifeguard performs a noble role as they are public servants who give back to their community through providing safe facilities for all to enjoy while preventing and responding to emergencies. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills are necessary to effectively work as a team at Rock River Rapids.
Qualifications:
- Obtain ARC lifeguard certification
- Attend additional site-specific training in mid-May
- Work mid-May through mid-August
- Pass a criminal background check
