What is a Concussion?
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury, caused by a blow to the head, which can change the way the brain functions.
Why are Concussions a Big Deal?
- A concussion can result in a variety of short- or long-term changes in brain function or, in rare cases, even death.
- Concussions can affect schoolwork, driving, sleep, emotions, relationships, and self-worth.
- Athletes that return to play too soon risk Second Impact Syndrome - a devastating brain injury that may result in death.
Youth Sport Parent Informational Sheet
The Derby Recreation Commission feels strongly that we are advocates for our youth. It is our duty to also keep them safe and make the hard decisions. We will always side with safety, so if your child shows signs related with a concussion, that is enough for us to make the decision that your child needs to be looked at. We do not diagnose concussions only look for signs associated with concussions. Please also make yourself aware of these signs.
