The ARTspot offers a wide variety of art classes in painting, ceramics, glass fusing, wood carving and more for all skill levels.
Art offerings vary by season.
Try something for the first time or re-ignite your creative spark. The ARTspot is the place for you. Whether it is for fun or to discover a new manner of self-expression, art has a value that will last a lifetime. Adult visual arts programs vary depending on the season and are for ages 16 and older.
Classes are held at the Hubbard Arts Center, 309 N. Woodlawn, unless otherwise noted.

Carve & Chat
Whittle away the hours as you work on your first project. Using basic tools and techniques, learn handheld carving, including shaping, detailing, and whittling. Youth ages 10 to 15 are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required.
ceramacist: joseph ricones
Ceramicist Joseph Riconnes shares more about his work in the July Senior Tuesday. Known for his signature pillow textures on bowls, mugs, and vases. Often glazed in sunshine yellow, denim blue, or creamy white, the punctuated by studs of gold or silver.

- Ceramic Christmas Trees
The lighted ceramic Christmas trees of our childhood are popular again. Create your own holiday memories during Hubbard Arts Center’s Christmas in July. Participants receive a large 14" Christmas Tree to glaze in a variety of styles. All materials, kiln firing, bulbs, and electrical units included. Additional sizes of trees available for purchase. Ages 16 and older.
- Gift Tags
Make this year’s holiday gifts one to be remembered-starting with customized gift tags. Perfect for warped gifts they’l always remember, holiday gift bags - even treat tins ful of breads and cookies. We’ll queue up the holiday music as we prepare for a holiday to remember. All supplies included. Ages 16 and older.
- Holiday Ornaments of Clay
Custom-create your own clay holiday ornaments-as gifts for kids and grandkids or for your own tree, garland or wreath. Templates will be provided or you can create your own designs. All materials provided, enough to make a dozen or more ornaments. Glaze and kiln-firing are also included. Ages 16 and older.
Coffee and color
Grab and coffee and (re)discover the joy of childhood-coloring books aren’t just for kids! Researchers have told us for years that coloring has its own set of wellness benefits. It’s relaxing, therapeutic, and can even lower blood pressure. Come and color with your own books and materials or use ours. Each week we’ll showcase new techniques and mediums, plus send you home with unique techniques and mediums. Saturday August 1 will be our first-ever Friends and Family Day.
GARDEN MOSAIC BENCH
Create a mosaic bench with your own design or choose from a variety of patterns. The first class will be to pattern prep and order glass.

Design and create a stepping stone using stained glass and tile. Choose a design or create your own. These concrete stepping stones are a great addition to any garden or landscape design.
GET YOUR PAINT ON!
Enjoy a relaxing night of painting and visiting with friends. In this one night class you will create your very own masterpiece and have a great time with friends. All supplies included. Space is limited, register early to reserve your spot.
GLASS FUSING AND SLUMPING
Learn the exciting art of fusing and molding glass to virtually any shape or form. Create a one of a kind artwork that you and your family will cherish for generations. Glass will be provided for class projects.
NTRODUCTION TO MIXED MEDIA
Mixed media provides a multitude of options for creativity. In this class you’ll learn about common materials and how they work together, while trying your own experiments. Then you’ll lay out your own collage, creating a work of art that incorporates crayon wax/beeswax, stencils, gesso, and more. Ages 16 and older.
Intro to water color painting with mark ward
Professional water colorist Mark Ward introduces students to water color while teaching the basic elements of composition and how to work with color patterns and light. The course is designed to develop each student’s unique artistic expression while building confidence in water color and its many techniques. Students will work at their own pace in a supportive environment and from self selected reference materials. All supplies provided. Ages 18 and older.
one day art: pottery
Take a moment out of your busy day to de-stress and feel the clay in your hands as you create your own coffee mug, bowl, or cup. Learn various pottery techniques working with clay, water, and glaze. All materials are included.
Palette knife painting
You will find that palette knife painting allows a more expressive quality to your painting and the colors are vibrant and fresh. It is a wonderful and fun way to paint just about anything!
poTTER’S WHEEL AND HAND-BUILDING
The fundamentals of wheel thrown pottery to more advanced forms will be taught depending on student interest and individual experience level. You can choose to stay off the wheel to create using hand-building techniques. Using soft and stiff slabs of clay, as well as other hand building techniques, students will learn to make boxes and other lidded forms. Whichever style you choose, special attention is given to surface decoration. 25 pounds of clay, glazes and kiln firing provided.
Sewing 101 Basics Workshop
We will instruct students how to master their machine in now time. Students will gain knowledge of their machine parts and how they work, operation of their machine including speed control, types of needles, threads, and troubleshooting. Plus plenty of time is dedicated to practicing basic stitches. Materials provided, including sewing machines. Students may bring their own machine. Ages 16 and older. Youth ages 10-15 are welcome to enroll with an adult.
totally awesome tote making
Design and sew your own Totally Awesome Tote. You’l learn how to customize your tote with pockets, supers, buttons, and embroidery. Even add a mini-change purse or phone case to the mix - you’ll be ready for anything. It is recommended that participants have taken Sewing 101 or have a knowledge of sewing machines. You may bring your own machines. Ages 16 and older. Ages 10-15 are welcome to enroll with an adult.
T-Shirt Scrappy Throw Blanket
Drawers overflowing with t-shirts? Don’t throw away those memories. Turn them into a t-shirt scrappy throw blanket that your family will treasure for years. Knowledge of sewing will be needed. Ages 16 and older. Ages 10-15 welcome with an adult.
watercolorist: Mark Ward
Senior Tuesdays debuts with Derby watercolorist Mark Ward. Hear from Ward, a native Kansan, who spent sumers at his grandfathers farm eat of Eureka. Much of his subject mater reflects the lifestyle of rural Kansas, clouding barns, farms, and native wildlife, reflecting a nostalgia for a simpler life. He is a member of the Kansas Artists Guild and Kansas Watercolor Society.
